Wittenberg Fall Seminar:
"Public-Private Partnerships: Cultural Diplomacy in the 21st Century"
November 19–21, 2010, Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Leucorea
Foundation
This seminar will explore the increasing
need for public-private partnerships to strengthen bilateral and
multilateral ties though cultural diplomacy. As stressed in the
Brademas Center report to the President and the Congress of the United
States (December 2009) on MOVING FORWARD: A RENEWED ROLE FOR AMERICAN
ARTS AND ARTISTS IN THE GLOBAL AGE: "International arts and cultural
exchanges be integrated into the planning strategies of U.S.
policymakers as a key element of public diplomacy." The report
recognizes financial restraints and recommends to "focus on new and
better ways to utilize arts and cultural exchange initiatives that are
currently underway in both the private and governmental sectors."
Students will briefly explore past efforts in cultural diplomacy in the
German-American context, discuss the challenges due to budget cuts and
reduced staffing and explore in intensive workshop settings how to
increase public-private cooperation. The German network of binational
centers will serve as a basis for analysis and discussion. The
Amerikazentrum Hamburg, now in new quarters and poised to extend its
mission, will serve as a case study to develop new program tools, a
profile in its community, and strategies to generate sponsoring to
secure the institution. Students will bring their own unique
perspective to the seminar and will make recommendations based on their
research and group work which might well result in further cooperation
between students and the Amerikazentrum.
Organizers
The seminar is organized by Dr. Martina Kohl, U.S. Embassy in close
cooperation with Professor Hans-Jürgen Grabbe, Center for

groups or alone. They will concentrate on a specific aspect of the
conference, compile a bibliography and produce an excerpt for a
scholarly paper. Each group will discuss individual projects among
themselves and with their group advisors. A final plenary presentation
will sum up the groups' work.
