Mark J. Rozell "Demystifying the US Christian Right" The Christian Right is an influential
but widely misunderstood interest group in US politics. Comprised mainly of
politically conservative born-again and evangelical Christians, this group
has weighed significantly in the two elections of George Bush to the
presidency, and the continuation of the GOP Congress since the mid-1990s.
Nonetheless, the Christian Right has had relatively limited policy success
in comparison to its electoral power. The purpose of this presentation will
be to describe and analyze this widely misunderstood group, to overcome
common stereotypes in order to convey an accurate assessment of its role in
US politics.
Mark J. Rozell "Religion and the Presidency"
Although many contemporary observers
characterize George W. Bush as a president uniquely influenced by his
religiosity, he is merely one in a long list of US chief executives guided
in their politics and policies by religious beliefs. This presentation will
provide a broad overview of the role that religion has played in the US
presidency, going back to the founding era and then ultimately emphasizing
the modern presidency.
